Family plan: Helping kids cope

Disasters affect kids differently at different agesDisasters are scary enough for grownups. Disasters hit kids even harder.

Some reactions come immediately, others have a delayed response weeks or months afterward.

Ages 1 TO 5:

  • The youngest lack verbal and conceptual skills to cope fully with the sudden stress, and may be affected just as much or more by their parents' or siblings' reactions.
  • Symptoms and treatment

Ages 5 TO 11:

  • Children in this group may become more withdrawn and/or more aggressive. They be especially hurt by the loss of prized objects or pets.

Ages 11 TO 14:

  • Peer reactions are very important to pre-adolescents. Kids in this group need acceptance from friends, and to feel that their feelings and fears are normal.
  • Symptoms and treatment

Ages 14 TO 18:

  • Adolescents are especially affected by their peers' opinions. Fears that their feelings or reactions are unusual or unacceptable might push the adolescent toward withdrawal or depression. Psychosomatic reactions are common.
