Over 743 islands (457 at high tide) make up the San Juans. Only 172 of these are named, and tourists flock to 3: San Juan, Orcas and Lopez islands. Most of the visitors arrive in the summer months when the weather is consistently warm and dry. Unsurprisingly, many locals think the best time of year in the islands is the fall, when things settle down and the weather is a bit cooler.
The San Juans are the place to go if you're looking to slow down the pace of life for a bit. Go for a bike ride, take a whale watching trip, or just sit and watch the sun set with a loved one. Numerous B & B's and small hotels dot the islands, making them an ideal place for a romantic weekend getaway.
Bear in mind, however, that the San Juans have not gone unnoticed in recent years by those seeking the same kind of rest and relaxation as you. If you're planning a trip during the high season, make your reservations well in advance to avoid disappointment. If cooler weather and empty beaches sound more appealing, consider heading out in the off-season. See Penny LeGate's story on quiet time in Friday Harbor for more about winter in the San Juans.
