Victorian seaport: Port Townsend Previous | Next
If you've never ventured over to Port Townsend for a relaxing weekend, you're missing out. This charming little town has everything you'll need for a quiet, romantic escape from the city: quaint bed and breakfasts, quality dining and scenic views - all an easy drive from Seattle.
The streets of Port Townsend are chock-a-block with gorgeous Victorian architecture. Take a sunny day stroll and admire the ornate scrollwork and intricate detailing that adorns all these well-preserved "Painted Ladies".
You'll find many diversions downtown. Art galleries, clothing stores and a teeny little movie theater will help you wile away your weekend hours. There are a number of nice restaurants, ranging from casual cafes to upscale dinner establishments. Have a tasty sub at Jordini's, or a mocha and pastries at Bread & Roses Bakery. For dinner, give the seafood at the Silverwater Cafe a try.
As for lodging, the best advice is to make your reservations early, because everyone loves Port Townsend as much as you will. There are some stand-outs: Manresa Castle is a huge 1892 mansion that originally housed Port Townsend's first mayor and has since been converted into a hotel. The Ann Starrett Mansion is a striking bed and breakfast and a National Historic Landmark. All rooms in both these places have been furnished with antiques. The English Inn is a bit outside of the town center, but well worth the extra legwork. The friendly proprietors will bend over backwards to make your stay enjoyable, and there's a nice hot tub next to their manicured garden.
