Enjoy the scenery on
Chuckanut Drive
Who: Families, couples, anyone looking for a quick, quiet getaway
What to see: Gorgeous vistas of Puget Sound, dense and dark foliage, RVs maneuvering around teeny curves
How far: 1 hour north of Seattle via I-5
Overview: Hop in the car and take a daytrip up to Chuckanut Drive. Completed in 1896 to connect Whatcom County with areas to the south, the winding road presents drivers with breathtaking views of Puget Sound.
Exit I-5 at Chuckanut and you'll find yourself surrounded by flat fields that bring to mind Midwestern farms. When you pass a handful of antiques stores, some cafes and an innovative espresso/hotdog stand, you'll know you're on the right path. Continue up the road, and you'll soon return to the leafy green Northwest.
The road (at times a smidge too narrow for comfort) dramatically edges along rocky overhangs while offering incredible views of the water and the San Juan Islands. Your driver can avoid neck-swivel syndrome and get a good long drink of the view by using one of many pull-off areas.
If you want to explore the wilds on your own two feet, the entrance to the Larrabee State Park is located off of Chuckanut Drive and offers fishing and trails for hiking.
