Camano Island

Rolling hills. Green pastures. Gorgeous water views. Camano Island may not have the name recognition of Port Townsend or Ocean Shores, but for many people that's a plus. If you're invigorated by quiet nights, solitary walks on the shore and long afternoon drives on empty roads, then this is the place to go.

The island seems to be in a state of transition. Windermere Real Estate signs are firmly planted in every last nook and cranny of the area, awaiting the inevitable flood of rich, overworked dot commers looking for a quiet place to build vacation homes. Camano's location (only an hour north of the city and easily accessible by bridge, no ferry needed) makes it a great weekend getaway possibility and a prime target for lots of development. Luckily for residents and those in the know, at present it remains sleepy and bucolic.
Holiday Inn hasn't been clued in to Camano's charms yet either. There are only a handful of B & Bs on the island (see list) including the outstanding Camano Island Inn. Camping is available, as well as cottage and house rentals.
For now, Camano Island is deliciously lacking in organized entertainment. Pack a picnic and head to Camano Island State Park, which offers a boat launch, hiking, camping and a large beach good for strolling. Or take a long drive around the island, enjoying glimpses of beautiful waterfront homes, farms and gorgeous water views.
