Pioneer Square
While Pioneer Square may be Seattle’s oldest district, it has a wealth of retail shops, some of Seattle's best restaurants and hot clubs that make it a popular destination for both locals and tourists alike.
After the fire of 1889, much of Pioneer Square was rebuilt in an attractive red brick. In 1970 Pioneer Square was declared an historic district and its fate as a window to Seattle’s past was secured.
The nucleus lies at the intersection of Yesler Way, 1st Avenue and S. Main. It was down Yesler, the original "Skid Row", that logs were transported to a waterfront mill in the 1880’s by timber baron Henry Yesler.
To get a better sense of history of the area, explore forgotten streets on the Underground Tour or visit Klondike Gold Rush Park. Head up to the observation deck of Smith Tower (on the corner of Yesler Way and 2nd Ave.), the tallest building west of the Mississippi when it was built in 1914.
