The Monorail
Built for the 1962 World's Fair, along with the rest of Seattle Center, the monorail is an integral part of Seattle, in spirit if not in day-to-day functionality.
Like an unfinished masterwork, the monorail acts almost purely as tourist candy. With only enough track to stretch from the base of the Space Needle to downtown's Westlake Mall, it serves no real transport purpose, just a five minute distraction and a reminder of what could have been, or -- as is hotly contested on both sides of the Seattle fence -- should be.
Details
The monorail runs approximately every 15 minutes daily; 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $1.25 for adults, 50 cents for seniors and children aged 5-12 and free for kids under 4. Call (206) 441-6038 for more information or visit seattlemonorail.com.
Location
The monorail shuttles back and forth between Seattle Center and Westlake Center on . Parking is not available at Westlake Center, but parking lots are available within a few blocks' walking distance.
