Historical Background

In 1940, John Knack, a member of the Yakima Sportsman Association, originated the idea of building a public park in the city of Yakima. The association, dedicated to better game management, pollution abatement and preservation and protection of natural resources, felt that such a park for people of Yakima would further the ideals of the association. An additional city park would enable more Yakima citizens to have a nearby recreation experience. The present location was chosen because of its proximity to town and the Yakima River and the variety of ponds and vegetation on the property. The association collected $17,000 to acquire the land and with volunteer labor began construction of the park. The Association prevailed upon the County Commission in 1946 to take over the park development. The county subsequently requested the state to take over development and operation.

120 picnic sites, 2 picnic shelters, 28 standard sites, 37 utility sites, 2 comfort stations, 1 outdoor fireplace with kitchen shelter, trailer dump, 1 residences, shop/service building, 2 hiker/biking sites. Of total sites listed above, 2 are ADA campsites (1 with utilities, 1 standard).

Activities
