Penrose Point State Park is located in Pierce County approximately 26 miles from Tacoma on Highway 16 to Purdy. At Purdy, take Highway 302 sixteen miles to Lakebay.

Acquired

Penrose Point was acquired in 17 parcels, between 1953 and November 1981, for a total cost of $1,481,172.

Historical Background

The community played an important part in the development of this park. It was established, initially, out of a swamp area that is now the large day use area. The park was named for Dr. Penrose of Tacoma, and from him, a portion of the park was acquired.

Facilities

The park has 83 campsites, 90 picnic sites, 4 comfort stations, 2 picnic shelters, 1,700 feet of unguarded beach, one 138-foot float made up of four 32-foot sections and one 10-foot section, 8 mooring buoys, 2.5 miles of hiking trails, a group camp with shelter, and a trailer dump station.

Of Special Interest

Early Native American activity is evidenced by a petroglyph located on the spit in the inner cove. The majority of the park is natural forest with a network of trails offering access.
