Acquired by lease from the Corps of Engineers in September 1972 at no cost.
Historical Background
The wife of Sam Hill, son-in-law of railroad tycoon James Hill, was named Mary. Sam built a "castle" home on a hill near the park for his wife; thus the name Maryhill. Sam made an unsuccessful attempt at establishing a colony of Belgian Quakers preceding World War II. Sam's home (three miles from the park), as well as a full scale model of Stonehenge (one mile from the park), are now open to the public.
